The Best of Apocalypse 2020

Hey Everyone!

This is coming a bit later than I had intended. I started writing this back in December but as I was writing I felt that what was coming out sounded more like a personal newsletter about my year. Instead, like last year, I want this to be just about the content that I consumed that I found either educational, motivational, or super interesting.

Every year I have the resolution to read more and every year I end up not reading much at all. However, 2020 was different for me in that I chose to start listening to books. Now for all the hardcore readers out there who don’t consider audiobooks to be equal to reading a book… Tough! Even as a kid growing up my ability to retain information that I heard was always better than missing the teacher's lesson by getting behind trying to take notes. That’s why this list has more books listed than last year!

Without further ado, here are my top content recommendations from 2021! Tell me what your top books, podcasts, articles, or documentaries were last year!

Books:

  • Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break: No matter your goals, Atomic Habits offers a proven framework for improving--every day. James Clear, one of the world's leading experts on habit formation, reveals practical strategies that will teach you exactly how to form good habits, break bad ones, and master the tiny behaviors that lead to remarkable results.

  • How to Win Friends and Influence People: This book was easily one of the most influential books I have ever read. I’ve read it twice, that’s how important the advice in it is. The references are super old, we’re talking about the late 1800’s early 1900’s. The fact that the references are ancient and yet the advice is still super effective and applicable today makes this book a must-read for EVERYONE!

  • Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind - Sapiens is a lively, groundbreaking history of humankind told from a unique perspective. 100,000 years ago, at least six species of human inhabited the earth. Today there is just one. Us. Homo Sapiens. How did our species succeed in the battle for dominance? Why did our foraging ancestors come together to create cities and kingdoms? How did we come to believe in gods, nations, and human rights; to trust money, books, and laws; and to be enslaved by bureaucracy, timetables, and consumerism? And what will our world be like in the millennia to come?

  • The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living - The Daily Stoic offers 366 days of Stoic insights and exercises, featuring all-new translations from the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the playwright Seneca, or slave-turned-philosopher Epictetus, as well as lesser-known luminaries like Zeno, Cleanthes, and Musonius Rufus. Every day of the year you'll find one of their pithy, powerful quotations, as well as historical anecdotes, provocative commentary, and a helpful glossary of Greek terms.

  • The Psychedelic Explorer's Guide: Safe, Therapeutic, and Sacred Journeys - Called “America’s wisest and most respected authority on psychedelics and their use,” James Fadiman has been involved with psychedelic research since the 1960s. In this guide to the immediate and long-term effects of psychedelic use for spiritual (high dose), therapeutic (moderate dose), and problem-solving (low dose and microdose) purposes, Fadiman outlines best practices for safe, sacred entheogenic voyages learned through his more than 40 years of experience--from the benefits of having a sensitive guide during a session (and how to be one) to the importance of the setting and pre-session intention.
